A Jewish humanitarian organization, Struggle to Save Ethiopian Jewry (SSEJ), has successfully completed an airlift of much-needed medical supplies to enclaves of Ethiopian Jews amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The organization, based in the United States, airlifted 10 pallets of medical materials to the city of Gondar over the course of several weeks.
SSEJ President Jeremy Feit spoke to Fox News Digital about the challenges facing Ethiopian Jewry and the importance of providing assistance to the community. He highlighted the impact of the conflict on the financial support typically provided by Israeli relatives to those in Ethiopia, emphasizing the urgent need for aid.
Partnering with the Afya Foundation and utilizing air transportation provided by Airlink, SSEJ’s efforts aim to not only support the Jewish enclaves in Ethiopia but also to assist other local health clinics in the region that are in dire need of supplies. Feit emphasized the critical importance of addressing the healthcare challenges faced by the broader community in the region.
The history of Ethiopian Jewry, including past evacuations to Israel such as Operation Moses and Operation Solomon, sheds light on the complexities surrounding their identity and eligibility for Israeli citizenship. The enduring Jewish community in Ethiopia continues to face challenges, including political and religious debates over emigration and support.
Despite the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, Ethiopian Jews in Gondar and Addis Ababa remain hopeful for progress and continue to pray for the safety of their loved ones in Israel.
