Austria’s far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ) has made headlines with an unprecedented election victory, led by their charismatic leader Herbert Kickl. Kickl’s party secured 29.2% of the vote, edging out the conservative People’s Party (ÖVP) by almost three points. However, despite this victory, forming a government may prove to be a challenge as the ÖVP has refused to join a coalition led by Kickl.
The election was dominated by issues such as migration, asylum, the economy, and the war in Ukraine, with a high turnout of 74.9%. Kickl’s victory marks another success for far-right parties in Europe, with voters aged 35-59 and slightly more women than men showing support for the FPÖ.
Kickl’s promises to build “Fortress Austria” and restore security and prosperity have resonated with voters, but his alignment with Hungary’s Viktor Orban and controversial statements have raised concerns. The FPÖ’s history, founded by former Nazis in the 1950s, and recent controversies, such as candidates singing an SS song, have sparked protests and criticism.
As Kickl seeks to form a coalition, challenges lie ahead as potential partners like the Social Democrats, Greens, and Neos have ruled out working with the far right. Kickl’s determination to lead Austria and act as a “servant and protector” may face opposition, with President Alexander Van der Bellen expressing reservations about the FPÖ’s stance on the EU and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The FPÖ’s victory adds to a trend of right-wing successes in Europe, with leaders like Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, Germany’s AfD, and France’s National Rally making gains. While some European leaders have backed the EU’s defense of Ukraine, Kickl’s victory signals a shift towards nationalist sentiments and anti-immigration policies.
For Kickl and the FPÖ, the election victory represents a significant comeback from past scandals and setbacks, signaling a new era in Austrian politics. As the country grapples with forming a government, the future direction and stability of Austria remain uncertain in the wake of this historic election.
