The percentage of U.S. adults identifying as LGBTQ+ has reached a new high of 7.6%, according to the latest Gallup poll. This marks a significant increase from previous years, with the percentage more than doubling since 2012.
Gallup predicts that if current trends continue, the U.S. LGBTQ+ population could reach 10% within the next three decades. The study also found that each younger generation is almost twice as likely as the generation before to identify as LGBTQ+.
Bisexual adults make up the largest proportion of the LGBTQ+ population, with 4.4% of U.S. adults and 57.3% of LGBTQ+ adults identifying as bisexual. Gay and lesbian identities are the next most common, each representing slightly over 1% of U.S. adults.
The study also found that more than 1 in 5 Gen Z adults and 1 in 10 millennials identify as LGBTQ+, while the percentage drops to less than 5% for Generation X, 2% for baby boomers, and 1% for the Silent Generation.
This data highlights the growing diversity within the LGBTQ+ community and the importance of understanding and supporting individuals of all sexual orientations and gender identities.
