Former BBC News presenter Huw Edwards has been charged with three counts of making indecent images of children, according to the Metropolitan Police. The offences are alleged to have taken place between 2020 and 2022 and relate to 37 images that were shared on a WhatsApp chat.
The 62-year-old broadcaster was arrested last November and charged last month, with a court appearance scheduled for Wednesday in London. The Metropolitan Police spokesperson stated that Edwards had been charged following an investigation and had been bailed to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.
The seriousness of the charges is highlighted by the classification of the images, with six category A, 12 category B, and 19 category C pictures allegedly found on his phone. A conviction at Crown Court could result in a lengthy prison sentence.
Mr. Edwards, who left the BBC in April, was a prominent figure at the corporation, known for his role as a news anchor and presenter on BBC One’s Ten O’Clock News. The case serves as a reminder of the legal implications of possessing indecent images and the potential consequences for those involved.
