Ilia Malinin Makes History with Record-Breaking Performance at World Figure Skating Championships

In a performance reminiscent of the hit TV show “Succession,” Ilia Malinin wowed audiences and judges alike at the World Figure Skating Championships with his winning program for the men’s singles competition. The 19-year-old student from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., showcased his incredible talent with a series of six quadruple jumps, including the elusive quadruple axel, a move that involves four and a half rotations in the air.

What set Malinin’s performance apart was not just his technical skill, but also his choice of music. Skating to the theme song of “Succession,” the moody string music added an extra layer of drama to his routine. Malinin’s execution of the quad axel, set to the opening notes of the song, left the audience in awe.

Known for his prowess in executing quadruple jumps, Malinin has earned the nickname “Quad God” for his ability to land these difficult maneuvers with precision. His performance at the championships, which earned him the highest score ever for a free skate, was a testament to his dedication and hard work.

Despite a minor injury leading up to the event, Malinin’s total competition score of 333.76 was more than 24 points above the second-place finisher. His coaches, who happen to be his parents and former Olympic skaters, have played a crucial role in his success, guiding him through the ups and downs of competitive skating.

Looking ahead, Malinin has his sights set on pushing the boundaries even further. He expressed interest in attempting a quintuple jump, a move that has never been performed in competition. As he continues to innovate and challenge himself, Malinin is poised to make even more history in the world of figure skating.
