The Amazon Rainforest is facing its worst forest fires in two decades, with more than 62,000 square kilometers already burned this year. The fires are largely caused by human activity, such as illegal logging, mining, and farming. Indigenous communities like the Caititu tribe are on the front lines, battling the flames to protect their land and way of life.

Raimundinha Rodrigues Da Sousa, who leads the voluntary fire service for her community, expresses the dire consequences of the fires, stating, “If these fires continue, we indigenous people will die.” The fires not only destroy the flora and fauna of the rainforest but also pose a serious health risk to those inhaling the smoke.

The situation is exacerbated by Brazil’s worst-ever drought, which has dried up rivers and made it difficult for communities to access water and travel. People like João Mendonça and Sandra Gomes Vieira are struggling to cope with the impacts of the fires and drought on their livelihoods and health.

As the fires rage on, it is clear that urgent action is needed to protect the Amazon Rainforest and the people who depend on it for their survival. Raimundinha’s message is clear: “For you to live in nature, you must take care of it.” The fate of the Amazon and its inhabitants hangs in the balance as the fires continue to ravage this vital ecosystem.
