Iran Executes German-Iranian Dissident Jamshid Sharmahd

In a shocking turn of events, Iran has executed German-Iranian dissident Jamshid Sharmahd after his conviction for “leading terror operations”, as reported by state media. Sharmahd, who was sentenced to death last year for “corruption on Earth”, was accused of leading a US-based pro-monarchist group, a charge he vehemently denied, with his family maintaining he was only a spokesman.

The execution of Sharmahd has sparked outrage and condemnation from various quarters. Germany’s foreign minister issued a stern warning to Tehran, stating that the execution of a German citizen would have “serious consequences”. Human rights organizations have also criticized the Iranian regime for the execution, with one group calling it a “serious violation of international law”.

Sharmahd’s daughter, Gazelle, has called on German prosecutors to investigate the alleged mistreatment of her father by the Iranian judiciary. She described the conditions her father faced in solitary confinement as a form of “soft killing” and emphasized that the regime’s aim was to send a message of terror to anyone who speaks out against it.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz labeled the execution as a “scandal” and criticized the lack of opportunity for Sharmahd to defend himself against the charges during the trial. The execution was carried out after approval from the Supreme Court, according to the Iranian judiciary’s Mizan website.

The case of Jamshid Sharmahd highlights the ongoing human rights issues in Iran and the challenges faced by dissidents and activists in the country. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely and calls for justice and accountability in cases of human rights violations.
