Title: Israel Abandons Extensive Counterstrike on Iran After Diplomatic Pressure

Israel abandoned plans for a much more extensive counterstrike on Iran after concerted diplomatic pressure from the United States and other foreign allies, according to senior Israeli officials. The decision came after the brunt of an Iranian assault on Israeli soil had been thwarted, leading to a more limited response.

Originally, Israeli leaders discussed bombarding several military targets across Iran, including near Tehran, in retaliation for the Iranian strike on April 13. However, after President Biden and other foreign ministers urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to prevent a wider war, Israel opted for a more restrained strike on Friday that avoided significant damage.

The attack showcased Israel’s military capabilities, as they strategically fired missiles from aircraft positioned hundreds of miles away and used small attack drones to confuse Iranian air defenses. The intention was to signal to Iran that Israel could strike without entering its airspace or setting off its air defense batteries.

The path to the attack began with Israel striking an Iranian embassy complex in Damascus, Syria, leading to private signals from Iran that they would respond with a major strike on Israeli soil. As tensions escalated, Israel prepared both defensive and offensive operations, coordinating with the U.S. Central Command and other allies.

The turning point came after a phone call between Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Biden, where the American president encouraged Israel to view the successful defense as a victory that required no further response. This led to a more contained Israeli attack that aimed to make a point to Iranian officials without escalating the situation further.

Ultimately, the attack on Iran was carried out in a limited manner, with Iranian officials focusing on the small drones rather than the missiles. By avoiding public blame and not claiming responsibility, Israel and Iran were able to reduce the risk of further escalation.

The diplomatic efforts and strategic decisions made by Israel and its allies helped prevent a broader conflict in the region, at least for the time being.
