Title: U.S. Expected to Impose Sanctions on Israeli Military Battalion Accused of Human Rights Violations
Leaders in Israel are speaking out against potential sanctions that the U.S. is expected to impose on an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) military battalion accused of violating human rights back in 2022. The targeted battalion, known as “Netzah Yehuda,” could face sanctions as early as this week, marking the first time the U.S. has taken such action against an Israeli military unit.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is anticipated to make the announcement, which has already sparked criticism from Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The tensions between the allies have been escalating as Israel continues its military operations in Gaza.
The sanctions stem from allegations of abuse of Palestinians by members of the battalion, including the case of a 78-year-old Palestinian-American man, Omar Assad, who died after being detained at a West Bank checkpoint. An autopsy revealed that Assad suffered a heart attack due to external violence, with signs of mistreatment including bruises, redness on his wrists, and bleeding in his eyelids.
Despite the expected sanctions, the Israeli military maintains that the battalion operates in accordance with the IDF Code of Ethics and international law. However, if sanctions are imposed, the consequences will be reviewed.
The U.S. is prohibited from providing aid or training to countries involved in human rights violations under the Leahy Law. The decision to sanction the battalion comes after investigations into multiple units, with four of them taking steps to address the violations they were accused of.
The announcement of sanctions could come as early as Monday, according to sources familiar with the matter. The move follows previous sanctions imposed on individuals and entities linked to settler violence in Israel.
The situation highlights the delicate balance between the U.S. and Israel, as both countries navigate complex geopolitical challenges in the region. Stay tuned for further developments on this evolving story.
