ITV’s chief executive defends Ed Balls’ interview with wife, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper on Good Morning Britain

ITV’s chief executive, Dame Carolyn McCall, has defended the controversial interview between Ed Balls and his wife, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, on Good Morning Britain. The interview, which took place on 5 August, sparked over 16,000 complaints to media regulator Ofcom.

Speaking at the Royal Television Society London Conference, Dame Carolyn explained that the interview was conducted on very short notice due to a national emergency. She emphasized that despite the unexpected circumstances, the interview was fair, impartial, and balanced.

Ofcom has announced that they will not be investigating the complaints further, stating that the relationship between Balls and Cooper was made clear, and a range of views were included in the program. The majority of the interview was also conducted by co-presenter Kate Garraway.

While Dame Carolyn defended the interview, she mentioned that they would not repeat a similar situation in the future. Ofcom has issued guidance to ITV to ensure due impartiality in such interviews moving forward.

The episode also featured an interview with Coventry South MP Zarah Sultana, who challenged the government’s response to the riots and questioned Ed Balls on immigration. Ofcom stated that Sultana was given ample opportunity to express her views and respond to questions, in line with viewers’ expectations.

In response to the episode, Sultana took to Twitter to express her thoughts, stating that she will continue to call out racism and Islamophobic hate despite any criticism from journalists.

Overall, the controversy surrounding the interview has sparked discussions about journalistic integrity and impartiality in political interviews on television.
