More than 150 Jewish actors, filmmakers, and other artists have come together to show their support for director Jonathan Glazer following his controversial remarks about Jewishness and the war in Gaza during his Oscars acceptance speech for his film “The Zone of Interest.”

Glazer’s speech at the Academy Awards on March 10 sparked intense debate, with some Jewish film professionals denouncing his comments last month. However, the new open letter published on Friday expresses solidarity with Glazer, emphasizing the importance of resisting dehumanization and mass atrocities throughout history.

The letter, signed by prominent figures such as Joaquin Phoenix, Joel Coen, and Tom Stoppard, calls for a permanent cease-fire in Gaza, the safe return of hostages, and an end to Israel’s bombardment and siege on the region. It also criticizes previous condemnations of Glazer, arguing that they stifle free speech and dissent within the industry.

Glazer’s film “The Zone of Interest” explores the horrors of the Holocaust through the lens of a Nazi official and his family living near Auschwitz. In his acceptance speech, Glazer highlighted the relevance of the film to present-day issues of dehumanization and urged reflection on current actions rather than historical events.

Despite the backlash and criticism, Glazer has remained silent on the matter. The support from fellow Jewish artists and filmmakers underscores the complexities and divisions within the art world surrounding the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the broader implications for Jewish identity and history.
