Vice President Kamala Harris’ decision to select Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate has sparked a range of reactions from Jewish organizations, with some expressing concern and others offering praise.

The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) took to social media to criticize the choice, pointing out Walz’s past statement equating socialism with neighborliness. The RJC’s post questioned Harris’ decision and raised doubts about Walz’s suitability as a running mate.

Harris’ decision reportedly came down to Walz and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, the only Jewish candidate under consideration. Some speculated that pressure from Democratic Party members sympathetic to Palestinians influenced Harris’ choice, as Israel’s conflict with Gaza continued.

However, the Jewish Democratic Council for America (JDCA) and Bend the Arc: Jewish Action expressed support for Harris’ selection of Walz. They praised the alignment of Harris and Walz with key issues important to Jewish voters and expressed confidence in their ability to secure victory in November.

The differing reactions highlight the complex dynamics at play within the Jewish community regarding Harris’ choice of running mate. While some organizations raise concerns about Walz’s past statements and associations, others see him as a strong ally in advancing shared values and priorities.

As the 2024 campaign unfolds, the impact of Harris’ decision on Jewish voters and the broader electorate remains to be seen. The diverse responses underscore the importance of understanding the nuances and complexities of political alliances and their implications for various communities.
