Vice President Kamala Harris Urges Immediate Cease-Fire in Gaza Amid Humanitarian Crisis
In a bold and urgent statement, Vice President Kamala Harris called for an “immediate cease-fire” in Gaza on Sunday, emphasizing the need for Hamas to agree to the six-week pause currently on the table and for Israel to increase the flow of aid into the besieged enclave.
Speaking in Selma, Ala., Harris’s remarks echoed the Biden administration’s recent push for a resolution to the conflict and highlighted the growing frustration with Israel’s response. Just last month, President Biden criticized Israel’s handling of the situation as “over the top.”
Harris did not mince words when addressing the dire situation in Gaza, referring to it as a “humanitarian catastrophe” and stressing the urgent need for action. She emphasized the importance of allowing aid to reach the starving population in Gaza and called for an immediate cease-fire to prevent further suffering.
“The conditions in Gaza are inhumane, and our common humanity compels us to act,” Harris stated, drawing applause from the crowd gathered for the anniversary of Bloody Sunday in Selma.
While reiterating the United States’ support for Israel’s right to defend itself, Harris also called on the Israeli government to do more to facilitate the flow of aid into Gaza. She emphasized the need for open borders, lifted restrictions on aid deliveries, and restored services to the enclave.
As Harris prepares to meet with Israeli cabinet official Benny Gantz on Monday, the pressure is mounting on the Biden administration to address the crisis in Gaza and work towards a lasting solution. With more than 30,000 Palestinians killed and the region on the brink of famine, the need for immediate action is clear.
