One of his standout performances was in the 1977 ABC mini-series “Roots,” where he played the role of Fiddler, an enslaved man who becomes a mentor to the central character, Kunta Kinte. The mini-series was a cultural sensation, breaking records for television viewership, and Gossett won an Emmy for his unforgettable portrayal.

In 1982, Gossett made history as the first Black actor to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Sergeant Foley in “An Officer and a Gentleman.” He brought genuine decency and warmth to the character, elevating the role beyond clichés.

Another notable film in Gossett’s career was the 1985 sci-fi adventure “Enemy Mine,” where he portrayed an alien life form stranded on a distant planet. While Gossett has several posthumous projects in postproduction, his final feature film appearance during his lifetime was in the adaptation of “The Color Purple,” where he portrayed the character of Ol’ Mister.
