Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, Criticizes Culture of Bullying on Social Media

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has spoken out against the culture of bullying on social media, highlighting the negative impact it has had on her mental health and well-being. In a keynote panel at the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas, Meghan addressed the issue of online abuse, particularly during her pregnancies with her children, Archie and Lilibet.

The glare of public attention has often left Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, on the receiving end of strong opinions. The couple has been vocal about the negative media attention they have faced, both during their time as active members of Britain’s royal family and since stepping back from royal duties in 2020.

Meghan emphasized the need for a cultural change in social media habits, pointing out how online platforms incentivize harmful behavior such as spreading inciting comments and conspiracy theories. She described the online abuse she has received as “hateful” and “cruel,” leading her to keep her distance from it for her own well-being.

The couple has also faced challenges with British tabloids, with Harry recently winning damages from The Mirror Group of newspapers for phone hacking. The intense media and online attention surrounding the royal family has raised concerns about their well-being, particularly in light of recent health issues faced by King Charles III and Princess Catherine.

Meghan’s message at SXSW resonated with many, as she called out the disturbing trend of women spewing hate towards other women online. She urged people to consider the impact of their words and actions on others, questioning why individuals choose to share hurtful content with their friends and put negativity out into the world.

As Meghan continues to advocate for a more compassionate and empathetic online environment, her words serve as a reminder of the importance of treating others with kindness and respect, both in person and on social media.
