Hopkinton, which has been the starting point of the Boston Marathon for the past century, celebrated its 100th anniversary as the race’s starting line. The start line proudly displayed “100 years in Hopkinton,” marking a significant milestone in the town’s history.

Race Director Dave McGillivray sent off the group of National Guard members, thanking them for their service and wishing them a great race. Lt. Col. Paula Reichert Karsten, one of the marchers, expressed her excitement to be part of such a quintessential Massachusetts event.

As the runners set off from Hopkinton, the weather forecast promised favorable conditions for the race, with sunshine and temperatures in the mid-50s expected. The course, spanning 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Copley Square in Boston, is known for its iconic route and historic significance.

Among the participants was race volunteer Hank Lopez, who was running his 100th marathon, with the Boston Marathon being his first. Lopez reflected on the significance of running in such a renowned event, especially during the town’s centennial celebration.

Top contenders in the race included two-time defending champion Evans Chebet and women’s winner Hellen Obiri, both aiming for victory in the prestigious marathon. American runners Emma Bates and Sara Hall also joined the strong field of competitors, hoping to make their mark in the historic race.
