Facebook’s decision to shut down Hillsdale College’s online courses page on the same day the school launched a course critical of Communism and Marxism has sparked controversy and accusations of censorship.

According to a statement from the school, the @hillsdaleonline Facebook page was taken down just as they launched a new course on Marxism, socialism, and communism. The course description highlighted the impact of cultural Marxism on various societal issues, including racial tensions, radical feminism, and the loss of basic rights.

Meta, Facebook’s parent company, claimed that the page was taken down in error and was restored before any inquiries were made. However, Hillsdale College’s executive director of media relations and communications, Emily Stack Davis, expressed concern over the timing of the censorship, as it coincided with the launch of the critical course.

The college, known for its conservative and Christian values, has seen a significant increase in applications, with many students seeking an alternative to institutions promoting “woke” ideologies. The shutdown of their online course page, which reportedly had over 300K followers, has potentially impacted their enrollment numbers.

The incident comes amidst a larger debate over free speech and censorship on social media platforms. Critics have raised concerns about the power of tech companies like Meta to control the flow of information and limit access to differing viewpoints.

As the controversy continues to unfold, the Hillsdale College community remains committed to upholding its values of academic freedom and intellectual diversity. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges facing institutions that seek to engage in open dialogue and critical analysis of complex issues.
