Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa was left in awe as he came face to face with his waxwork double at Madame Tussauds in London. The Scottish actor, known for his role in Netflix’s Sex Education, was captured on video giggling and expressing shock at the uncanny likeness of his wax figure.
Gatwa, who worked closely with artists from Madame Tussauds to ensure accuracy in measurements and details, gave his final approval to the waxwork in May. The statue, dressed in one of Gatwa’s iconic outfits from the series, will be on display for the public starting Friday.
The unveiling of Gatwa’s waxwork was attended by Russell T Davies, the current showrunner of Doctor Who, who led the revival of the series in 2005. The wax figure will be part of the new film and TV-themed zone at Madame Tussauds, alongside other famous characters like James Bond and E.T.
Born in Rwanda during the country’s civil war, Gatwa and his family moved to the UK when he was two. He grew up in Edinburgh and Dunfermline before making a name for himself in the entertainment industry. Gatwa first appeared as the 15th Doctor in a special episode for the show’s 60th anniversary.
This isn’t the first time Madame Tussauds has immortalized a Doctor Who character in wax. Previous incarnations of the Time Lord, including Tom Baker and Jodie Whittaker, have also been recreated by the museum. Gatwa’s waxwork adds to the long history of Doctor Who figures at Madame Tussauds, delighting fans of the iconic sci-fi series.
