The Massachusetts woman accused of killing her police officer boyfriend in a tragic incident in January 2022 is now facing a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the victim’s family. Karen Read, the defendant in this case, has been at the center of a legal battle that has captured the attention of the public and the media.

Paul O’Keefe, the brother of the late Boston Police officer John O’Keefe, filed the lawsuit on behalf of the O’Keefe family in Plymouth Superior Court. The lawsuit also names the two bars where the couple consumed drinks before the fatal incident took place.

The trial of Karen Read ended in July after a Massachusetts jury was deadlocked and could not reach a unanimous decision about her innocence or guilt. The case has been marked by intense emotions and high stakes, with supporters on both sides passionately advocating for their positions.

Prosecutors alleged that Read purposely backed into her boyfriend with her SUV during a heated argument fueled by alcohol, leaving him to die in the snow. However, Read has maintained her innocence, claiming that she was framed in a conspiracy to protect a powerful family with ties to law enforcement.

The lawsuit filed by the O’Keefe family accuses Read of reckless conduct that led to John O’Keefe’s death and also holds the bars accountable for serving alcohol to an intoxicated person. The family also alleges that Read inflicted severe emotional distress on the victim’s niece by her actions on the day of the incident.

As the legal battle continues, with a retrial scheduled for January, the case of Karen Read remains a complex and contentious issue. The outcome of this lawsuit will have far-reaching implications for all parties involved and could set a precedent for similar cases in the future.
