The 2024 Kabosh theatre production of Callings will tour throughout the UK and Ireland, bringing to life the story of Cara-Friend, a befriending and support service set up by volunteers in 1974 to help LGBTQ communities find connection within the conflict-ridden landscape of Northern Ireland in the 1970s.

The play, written by Dominic Montague, is set in the Belfast offices of Cara-Friend during a time when Northern Ireland was the only part of the UK where “homosexual acts between consenting adults” remained a criminal offense. It showcases a collection of real-life phone calls and letters from the 1970s and 80s, preserved by the public records office (PRONI).

Adam Murray, a representative from Cara-Friend, highlighted the fear and stigma that LGBTQ individuals faced during that time, emphasizing the vital support provided by the organization to those who felt scared, alone, and isolated.

Doug Sobey, one of the founding members of Cara-Friend, shared the courage it took for individuals to reach out for help, recalling the overwhelming response they received in the form of letters and phone calls, leading to the establishment of a telephone helpline in 1976.

Despite the progress made in laws and attitudes towards gender and sexuality, the play’s director, Paula McFetridge, emphasized the continued need for support services like Cara-Friend due to the persistence of homophobia in Northern Ireland. She highlighted the play’s focus on love and relationships, aiming to celebrate the connections made during a time of adversity.

The production aims to shed light on the struggles and triumphs of LGBTQ individuals in Northern Ireland during a tumultuous period, showcasing the resilience and strength of those who sought solace and support through organizations like Cara-Friend.
