The latest Quinnipiac University poll has revealed some surprising information about Americans’ views on abortion as the November election approaches. According to the poll, a record number of Americans, 66%, now support legal abortion in some or all cases, marking the highest level of support ever recorded by the poll in its two-decade history.
The poll also found that a plurality of 34% believe abortion should be legal in all cases, while 32% said it should be legal in most cases. On the other hand, support for abortion to be illegal in all cases is at a record low of 5%, with 22% saying it should be illegal in most cases.
Strong majorities of 89% and 85% believe abortion should be legal when the life of the mother is in danger and when the pregnancy is caused by rape or incest, respectively.
Democrats have been making abortion a central issue in their campaigns this election year, warning that Republican control of Congress, along with another four years in the White House for former President Donald Trump, could lead to a nationwide ban on abortion.
In response to these concerns, Trump recently stated that the issue of abortion should be decided by the states rather than through national legislation. He emphasized his support for in vitro fertilization and stated that states should determine their own laws for abortion, with exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother.
However, Trump’s statement has drawn criticism from some pro-life groups, including Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, whose president Marjorie Dannenfelser expressed disappointment, arguing that it was a victory for Democrats.
As the election draws nearer, these findings from the Quinnipiac University poll shed light on the complex and evolving views of Americans on the issue of abortion. Stay tuned for more updates on this topic as the campaign season continues.
