Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran has been suspended for two games after being caught on a hot mic using an anti-gay slur towards a heckling fan at Fenway Park. The suspension will begin with Monday’s game against the Texas Rangers, as reported by ESPN.

The incident occurred during the sixth inning of Sunday’s game against the Houston Astros when a fan shouted at Duran that he needed a tennis racket. In response, Duran yelled back, “Shut up,” followed by the offensive slur. After the game, Duran issued a statement apologizing for his actions, expressing remorse for offending and disappointing many people, especially the LGBTQ community.

“Our young fans are supposed to be able to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I fell far short of that responsibility,” Duran said in his apology.

Duran, who was an All-Star for the first time this season, has been having a standout year, leading the majors with 36 doubles and 13 triples. He was hitting .291 with 14 home runs before the suspension.

The Boston Red Sox organization has not commented on the incident, but Duran’s actions have sparked a conversation about the importance of respect and inclusivity in sports. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
