Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a Democratic representative from Texas, has passed away at the age of 74 after battling pancreatic cancer, her office announced on Friday night. Jackson Lee had been serving the 18th Congressional District of Texas for 30 years and was known as a fierce champion of the people.
In a statement released by her office, Jackson Lee was described as a local, national, and international humanitarian who fought for racial justice, criminal justice, and human rights, with a special focus on women and children. She had previously battled breast cancer in 2011 and announced the following year that she was cancer-free.
Jackson Lee’s passing has been met with an outpouring of grief and tributes from lawmakers and colleagues. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries described her as an “inimitable force for change” and a “warrior for justice” throughout her historic career.
The Congressional Black Caucus, of which Jackson Lee was a member, also paid tribute to her, calling her a “titan” and a “stalwart member of Congress.” Her legacy includes legislative victories such as establishing the Juneteenth Federal Holiday and reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act.
Jackson Lee is survived by her husband, Elwyn Lee, and her two children, Jason and Erica. Funeral arrangements are pending as the nation mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant and advocate for justice.
