The 2020 Democratic National Convention is shaping up to be a unique and potentially controversial event, as the party navigates the challenges of holding a convention during a pandemic and in the shadow of the Trump administration.
After opting to hold their convention virtually in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, Democrats are now planning to gather in person in Milwaukee. However, some businesses in the city are not on board with the convention, with one bar owner even choosing to close down rather than participate in what he called “tomfoolery.”
Meanwhile, some organizations are choosing to focus their efforts on Chicago instead of Milwaukee, with concerns about major corporations shying away from both the Democratic and Republican conventions. The Illinois Restaurant Association president noted that while conversations are happening with these companies, contracts have yet to be signed.
The hesitancy of deep-pocketed corporations may also be impacting the choice of venues for the convention, with the Milwaukee Art Museum opting not to host private parties due to cost and a desire to remain apolitical.
As the convention approaches, it remains to be seen how these various factors will shape the event and the political landscape moving forward. Stay tuned for more updates on the 2020 Democratic National Convention.
