Robert Downey Jr, the iconic actor who brought Iron Man to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is set to make a comeback to the superhero world after five years. However, this time he will not be reprising his role as Tony Stark. Instead, Downey Jr will be taking on the role of Dr. Victor Von Doom, a prominent villain in the Marvel comic books.
The exciting news was revealed at the Comic Con event in San Diego, where Downey Jr appeared on stage concealed behind Doctor Doom’s iconic mask and green cloak before unveiling himself to fans. Speaking to reporters, the 59-year-old actor expressed his excitement about playing a complicated character like Dr. Doom.
Downey Jr’s return to the Marvel franchise will be in the upcoming films “Avengers: Doomsday,” set to be released in May 2026, and a further installment titled “Secret Wars” a year later. This marks his first appearance in a Marvel film since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”
The Marvel universe is also set to introduce new stars in upcoming films, with Harrison Ford replacing the late William Hurt as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in “Captain America: Brave New World,” Florence Pugh taking on a leading role in “Thunderbolts,” and Pedro Pascal making his Marvel debut in “The Fantastic 4: First Steps.”
Despite the success of the Marvel movie series, which has generated $30 billion in box office takings, profits have slowed in recent years. However, the recent release of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has shown potential for a revival, making $96 million on its opening day.
