Ukraine’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk region has taken a significant turn as Ukrainian forces destroyed a strategically important bridge over the river Seym. This bold move has cut off part of the local district and hampered Kremlin’s efforts to supply its troops in the area.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Ukrainian troops are strengthening their positions in Kursk, referring to the captured territories as an “exchange fund” that could potentially be swapped for Ukrainian regions occupied by Moscow. This marks Ukraine’s deepest incursion into Russia since Moscow’s full-scale invasion over two years ago.
The operation has resulted in over 120,000 people fleeing to safety, with Ukrainian forces claiming territorial gains but emphasizing that they do not seek to occupy Russian territory. A senior aide to President Zelensky reiterated this stance, stating that Ukraine aims to negotiate with Moscow on their own terms.
As the offensive progresses, Ukrainian military officials report further advancements, with hopes of taking prisoners in upcoming battles. Meanwhile, Russian forces have made gains in Ukraine’s east, capturing towns and moving closer to vital logistics hubs.
The situation remains tense as both sides continue to clash, with civilian casualties reported in various regions. The conflict shows no signs of abating, with both Ukraine and Russia escalating their military actions in the ongoing crisis.
