Scottish Gaelic singer Kim Carnie has opened up about keeping her same-sex relationship a secret for six years out of fear of causing upset. Carnie, who was named Gaelic singer of the year in the 2021 Scots Trad Music Awards, finally came out with the full support of her family and friends, describing it as a relief.
Her experience has inspired a new international film, “Kim Carnie Out Loud,” which sheds light on the stories of individuals in the LGBTQ+ community who have hidden their sexuality. The film, which has already been screened at 18 international festivals and won 26 awards, will have its UK premiere in Glasgow.
Carnie, who is the lead singer in Scottish traditional music group Mànran and folk collective Staran, shared that she and her partner at the time kept their relationship a secret from their friends and family from ages 16 to 22. She explained that growing up in more traditional areas like the Highlands and Islands made them fear losing friends and family if they found out.
After finally opening up about her sexuality, Carnie expressed relief and gratitude for the acceptance she received from her close circle. She emphasized the importance of sharing stories like hers to raise awareness and support for the LGBTQ+ community.
The film, “Kim Carnie Out Loud,” features individuals from around the world sharing their experiences, including a refugee who was tortured for his sexuality. Carnie hopes the film will bring joy and shed light on the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, emphasizing the importance of creating a safe and accepting environment for everyone.
