The aftermath of the 12-day Israeli raid on Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City in March has left a devastating scene of destruction and loss. United Nations workers and Gazan health officials have returned to the hospital to bury the unidentified remains of those who perished during the intense battle.

The once bustling health care facility now lies in ruins, with shattered concrete, overturned cars, and a half-crushed ambulance painting a grim picture of the violence that unfolded. The stench of death lingers in the air as aid workers uncover bodies covered by rough plastic sheets or buried under mounds of dirt.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the World Health Organization, emphasized the importance of giving the deceased proper burials to allow for future identification through forensic examinations. He called the war a “moral failure of humanity” and stressed the need for compassion and respect for the dead.

Israeli officials have defended their raid on Al-Shifa, claiming that remnants of Hamas’s military wing had regrouped at the hospital. However, Gazan officials allege that hundreds of civilians were killed in the attack, a claim that Israel denies. The conflicting accounts highlight the complexity and tragedy of the situation.

In a video posted online by Dr. Ghebreyesus, aid workers can be seen sifting through the rubble of the hospital and carefully removing bodies. Dr. Mustasem Salah, a Gazan medical official, described the heartbreaking task of identifying the deceased, often relying on personal belongings found on the bodies.

The emotional toll on families who have lost loved ones in the raid is unimaginable, with Dr. Salah noting that the sight of decomposing and torn-apart bodies is beyond words. As the process of burying the dead begins, the world watches in sorrow and solidarity with the people of Gaza, hoping for peace and healing in the midst of tragedy.
