Democratic Senators Urge President Biden to Halt Offensive Weapons to Israel Until Humanitarian Aid Restrictions are Lifted

A group of Democratic senators, led by Senator Bernie Sanders, have called on President Biden to cease providing offensive weapons to Israel for its war against Hamas until restrictions on U.S.-backed humanitarian aid going into Gaza are lifted.

In a letter to the President, the senators argued that by continuing to arm Israel, Biden was violating the Foreign Assistance Act, which prohibits military support to any nation that restricts the delivery of humanitarian aid.

The senators emphasized the need for Israel to expand humanitarian access and facilitate safe aid deliveries throughout Gaza, warning of serious consequences if these actions are not taken.

Senator Sanders highlighted that Israel’s actions are in breach of American military aid terms outlined in the Humanitarian Aid Corridor Act, which states that if a country blocks or restricts American humanitarian assistance, U.S. military aid cannot be provided.

The senators, including Chris Van Hollen and Jeff Merkley, urged Biden to use his leverage to demand a change in Israel’s tactics as civilian casualties rise and reports of starvation increase in Gaza.

Despite the Senate recently approving an emergency national security aid bill for Israel, the senators drew a distinction between defensive aid, like the Iron Dome, and offensive military assistance for Israel’s assault on Gaza.

The United Nations and aid groups have accused Israel of hindering aid deliveries to Gaza, prompting Biden to authorize an airdrop of meals and the construction of a temporary pier for aid entry.

The senators criticized the administration for not using all available leverage to ensure aid reaches starving Palestinians, emphasizing the urgent need for action to prevent further suffering in Gaza.

As pressure mounts on Biden to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the senators are pushing for a change in Israel’s conduct and a more proactive approach from the U.S. administration.
