A powerful storm system swept through the Northeast on Saturday, bringing heavy rain to New York City and Philadelphia, while dumping heavy snow on parts of New England and Northern New York. The unusual weather event served as a reminder that winter was not quite ready to exit the stage.
In Central Park, a staggering 3.63 inches of rain had fallen by 5 p.m. on Saturday, setting a new record for the wettest calendar day ever recorded in March. Philadelphia also experienced record-breaking rainfall, with 3.06 inches of rain, surpassing the previous daily record set in 2005.
As the storm moved through the region, New York City was under a flood watch, with the potential for scattered flash flooding. Minor flooding was expected along small rivers and streams in New Jersey, the Lower Hudson Valley, and southern Connecticut.
Meanwhile, parts of New England were blanketed with heavy snowfall. Vermont saw significant snow accumulation, with areas in Windsor and Rutland Counties reporting 10 to 17 inches of snow. Shrewsbury, Vt., reported a whopping 19.3 inches of snow, while Burlington had around six inches.
Other parts of New England also saw substantial snowfall, with Lovell, Maine, recording 13.5 inches and Waterville Valley, N.H., receiving 17.6 inches of snow. Albany, N.Y., recorded 2.5 inches of snow, while areas north of the city, like Glens Falls and Wilton, saw up to 18 inches of snowfall.
The storm also brought freezing rain to the region, causing power outages as branches fell. More than 73,000 customers were without power in New York State by Saturday evening. The system was expected to move into the Western United States, bringing snow to the northern High Plains, the Dakotas, Minnesota, and parts of the upper Great Lakes.
Heavy snowfall was forecast for central and eastern Montana, the North Plains, and the upper Midwest, with some areas expected to receive up to two feet of snow. Hazardous driving conditions were anticipated in the Central and Southern Plains due to heavy snow and gusty winds.
Overall, the storm system brought a mix of extreme weather conditions to the Northeast and beyond, serving as a stark reminder that winter was not quite ready to release its grip on the region.
