Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., met with Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Thursday to discuss the ongoing border crisis and the House GOP’s response to it. The meeting came after Johnson announced that the House of Representatives would send impeachment articles against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate on April 10.
Johnson expressed concern about the Biden administration’s handling of the border, stating, “By opening the border to criminals, traffickers, and cartels, the Biden administration is actively endangering the American people.” He also voiced support for Abbott’s efforts to secure the border and discussed ways to hold the Biden administration accountable.
Abbott urged Johnson to pass border security legislation to help stop illegal crossings along the southern border. The two also discussed the House’s impeachment of Mayorkas and the ongoing fight against President Biden’s actions at the border.
The White House has been critical of Abbott’s border policies, while Texas officials have accused the White House of not doing enough to address the migrant crisis. House Republicans have pressured Biden and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to take up a strict border security bill, which Democrats have dismissed.
Johnson sent a letter to Schumer informing him of the impeachment articles against Mayorkas and urged him to schedule a trial expeditiously. The House is set to present the articles to the Senate on April 10, with Johnson and 11 other Republicans selected as impeachment managers.
The meeting between Johnson and Abbott highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding border security and the efforts to address the crisis at the southern border. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
