Gunmen Open Fire at Moscow Concert Venue, Killing Dozens
In a horrifying and deadly attack, several gunmen dressed in camouflage opened fire at a popular concert venue on the outskirts of Moscow on Friday night. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack through an affiliated news agency. U.S. security officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, stated that they believed the Islamic State in Khorasan, a branch of the terrorist group active in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran, carried out the assault.
Videos posted on social media and verified by The New York Times show the chaos and terror inside the venue as gunmen entered and began firing rifles. People were seen running past bloodied victims on the floor, while photos showed bodies lined up outside the building.
Emergency services dispatched helicopters to rescue people from the building’s roof, where flames and smoke billowed into the night sky. The Russian national guard continued to search for the attackers and evacuate people from the complex, with reports indicating up to five perpetrators were involved.
At least 115 people were hospitalized, including five children, with 60 adults in serious condition. Russian President Vladimir V. Putin expressed hopes for the recovery of the injured and gratitude to the medical staff treating them.
The U.S. Embassy in Moscow had issued a security alert on March 7, warning of potential extremist plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, including concerts. The attack on Friday was connected to this warning, according to American officials briefed on the matter.
Statements of condolence and outrage poured in from around the world, with calls for justice for the victims. The attack occurred on the same day as a significant missile and drone strike on Ukraine, further escalating tensions in the region.
The complex where the attack took place was developed by billionaire Aras Agalarov, known for hosting events like the Miss Universe pageant. The venue has seen performances by renowned artists like Eric Clapton, Dua Lipa, and Sia.
