Former White House aide and Trump ally Steve Bannon was released from prison on Tuesday after serving a four-month sentence for contempt of Congress. Bannon, 70, left the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, and is expected to hold a news conference in Manhattan later in the day. He will also resume his “War Room” podcast.
Bannon was found guilty in 2022 of two counts of contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with the Jan. 6 House Committee’s investigation into his involvement in Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Despite his conviction, Bannon expressed pride in beginning his prison sentence, calling himself a “political prisoner.”
His release comes just one week before Election Day, where Trump will seek to return to the White House. Bannon’s legal team is now appealing his convictions, arguing that the congressional subpoena was invalid due to Trump’s assertion of executive privilege. Bannon also faces criminal charges in New York for allegedly defrauding donors in a border wall fundraising scheme.
Bannon’s story continues to unfold as he navigates legal challenges and remains a prominent figure in conservative politics. Stay tuned for updates on his case and political activities.
