The Benefits of Pure Orange Juice: New Study Reveals Surprising Findings

Researchers from Toronto Metropolitan University have uncovered some unexpected benefits of drinking 100% orange juice compared to a sugar-sweetened beverage. The study, funded by the Florida Department of Citrus and published in the journal Nutrients, examined the effects of orange juice on appetite, food intake, and glycemic response in adults.

In the study, 36 “normal weight” adults were given either 100% orange juice, an orange drink, or water before eating. The results showed that those who consumed 100% orange juice had lower food and energy intake compared to those who drank the orange drink. Caloric compensation from orange juice was 84%, while it was -25% for the orange drink.

Additionally, blood glucose levels were lower after consuming 100% orange juice, indicating a positive impact on glycemic response. Study co-author Nick Bellissimo noted that the flavonoids in orange juice may slow down the digestion and absorption of sugar, leading to a more stable blood glucose level.

The findings suggest that 100% orange juice can be a beneficial alternative to sugar-sweetened beverages. While dietary guidelines recommend reducing sugar intake, orange juice contains beneficial nutrients like vitamin C and flavonoids that can have a positive impact on health.

Registered dietitian Ilana Muhlstein emphasized the importance of choosing 100% orange juice over sugary drinks and recommended mixing it with water for a more positive blood sugar result. Drinking water before meals can also help lower blood sugar levels, she added.

Overall, the study highlights the potential benefits of incorporating 100% orange juice into a balanced diet. With lower energy intake, improved glycemic response, and added nutrients, orange juice may be a valuable addition to a healthy lifestyle.
