Budapest-born, London-based decorator Gergei Erdei has unveiled his latest collection of hand-painted folding pinewood screens, which he describes as “movable pieces of art.” The collection, part of his Objects of Desires series, features six unique designs inspired by various sources, including Italian couturier Elsa Schiaparelli’s works and Pompeii’s ancient mosaics.

Erdei’s screens, standing over seven feet tall, showcase trompe l’oeil columns, wing-footed mythological figures, and interlinked geometric shapes. The mythological design draws from Pompeii’s soft, ocher hues, achieved through multiple coats of acrylic paint. Erdei’s fascination with Pompeii’s faded layers of history is evident in his work.

Screens have a rich history, originating during China’s Han dynasty and becoming popular in Europe in the 17th century. Erdei envisions his screens as theatrical backgrounds, perfect for enhancing spaces behind beds, sofas, or fireplaces. His bespoke screens will also be featured in the interior design of a private riad turned hotel called Le M in Marrakech.

The Objects of Desire screens are priced starting at $6,700 and are available on gergeierdei.com. Erdei’s unique blend of artistry and inspiration promises to add a touch of elegance and history to any space they adorn.
