The Rise of Virtual Assistants: Are They Really Helping or Hindering?

In today’s fast-paced world, many of us find ourselves overwhelmed with tasks and responsibilities. From work deadlines to household chores, the to-do list never seems to end. Enter virtual assistant services, promising to alleviate the burden by taking care of our tasks for us. But are these services truly helpful, or are they just adding to the problem?

One common criticism of virtual assistant services is that they often suggest throwing money at the problem, which is not helpful for those who are already struggling financially. These apps can transform parents from workers into consumers, turning to-do lists into shopping lists. Behind the scenes, it may be call center workers or other invisible laborers performing the tasks that are meant to bring us joy.

The line between human and artificial is blurred in these services. While some claim to use actual humans rather than AI chatbots, Forbes reports that these humans are assisted by generative AI. The language used by these services, such as “worker bees” or “fairy godmothers,” can obscure the reality of outsourcing tasks to an anonymous labor force.

Furthermore, the work that these services aim to eliminate is often feminized, seen as “women’s work.” Virtual assistants can help distribute family burdens more equitably, but this duty is often demeaned as “nagging.” Some argue that AI could play a crucial role in easing societal and economic burdens that disproportionately affect women.

In a world where efficiency is prized above all else, the image of a bespectacled woman juggling multiple tasks while wearing a baby in a sling and balancing a bowl of dog food may seem all too familiar. The portrayal of a mother as a robotic being, her work dismissed as easily outsourced, raises questions about the true value of virtual assistant services.

As one writer who spent time as a virtual assistant taskmaster discovered, much of the busywork claimed by these apps is actually personal, rewarding, and even transformative. While virtual assistants may offer convenience, they also raise important questions about the nature of work, gender roles, and the impact of technology on our lives.
