Mexican Medical Examiners Learn About Fentanyl Testing at Colorado Body Farm

A group of Mexican medical examiners recently visited Colorado Mesa University’s Forensic Investigation Research Station, also known as a “body farm,” to learn about testing cadavers for fentanyl. The visit was organized by the U.S. State Department in an effort to address Mexico’s fentanyl problem.

During their visit, the Mexican forensic specialists observed as researchers collected maggots from decomposing bodies, explaining that these larvae and pupa casings can be tested for drugs. This hands-on experience highlighted the potential evidence that maggots can provide in forensic investigations.

In Mexico, there is a lack of systematic testing for fentanyl in deceased individuals, leading to uncertainty about the extent of fentanyl use in the country. The trip to Colorado aimed to demonstrate to Mexican officials that fentanyl is not just an American issue, but a problem affecting Mexicans as well.

The Mexican medical examiners were impressed by the advanced tools and techniques used by American pathologists to confirm drug overdoses. In contrast, Mexican examiners often rely on low-tech methods due to limited resources and funding.

Dr. César González Vaca, the chief medical examiner of Baja California state, shared his experience of implementing fentanyl testing in Tijuana and Mexicali, where alarming rates of fentanyl-related deaths have been detected. He emphasized the urgent need for Mexico to address the growing public health emergency posed by fentanyl.

The visit to Colorado shed light on the importance of comprehensive drug testing and forensic analysis in identifying and addressing the spread of fentanyl in Mexico. By collaborating with international partners and adopting best practices in forensic investigation, Mexican authorities hope to better understand and combat the fentanyl crisis within their borders.
