Binance Executive Files Lawsuit Against Nigerian Authorities

In a bold move, detained Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan has taken legal action against Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The lawsuit, filed on March 18, alleges violations of Gambaryan’s fundamental human rights and seeks various reliefs, including the return of his international passport, immediate release from custody, and an injunction against future detention in similar investigations.

Represented by his lawyers from Aluko and Oyebode Law Firm, Gambaryan’s legal battle has garnered attention from the digital asset community, which is demanding his freedom. Nadeem Anjarwalla, Binance’s Africa regional manager who escaped custody on March 22, also filed a separate suit in a bid for justice.

The legal proceedings have been adjourned to April 8 as the executives seek release. The Nigerian government’s crackdown on cryptocurrency platforms, citing concerns about their impact on the local currency and allegations of money laundering activities, led to the charges of tax evasion against Binance and its executives.

Despite the charges, the court’s decision to postpone the proceedings due to the absence of respondents and legal representation has sparked outrage among supporters of Gambaryan and Anjarwalla. The charges against Binance include neglecting to register with local agencies, tax evasion, and facilitating users evading tax payments. Additionally, the Nigerian government has accused Binance of failing to issue invoices for Value Added Tax (VAT) purposes.

As the legal battle unfolds, the cryptocurrency community is closely watching the developments and standing in solidarity with the detained executives. The outcome of this case could have far-reaching implications for the future of digital assets in Nigeria and beyond.
