Doyel, who had already faced criticism for a previous uncomfortable interaction with the No. 1 pick of the Indiana Fever, referred to Clark as “that” and “it” in a new video that surfaced while he was speaking to Fever coach Christie Sides.
In the video, Doyel told Sides, “You were just given the keys to that,” in reference to Clark. He then asked, “What are you going to do with it?” This odd phrasing of a question about Clark came after Doyel’s previous awkward exchange with her at a press conference.
During the earlier incident, Doyel formed a heart symbol with his hands for Clark to open his questioning. When Clark asked if he liked it, Doyel responded, “I like that you’re here.” Things took a turn for the worse when Doyel suggested that Clark start making the gesture to him, saying, “Start doing it to me, and we’ll get along.”
The social media backlash was swift and harsh, with many calling Doyel out for his behavior. CBS Sports host Chris Williamson said he would understand if the Fever revoked Doyel’s credentials, while Barstool Sports President Dave Portnoy labeled him a “pervert.”
Doyel later apologized for his remarks and wrote a column titled “Caitlin Clark, I’m so sorry. On Wednesday I was part of the problem.” In his apology, Doyel acknowledged that his comments were clumsy and awkward and expressed his intention to do better in the future.
