The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached unprecedented levels, with aid workers facing immense challenges in responding to the dire situation, the United Nations reported on Wednesday. The scale of the crisis is so vast that the U.N. and other aid groups are seeking over $2.8 billion in funding to continue their relief efforts for the rest of the year.
The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs described the situation in Gaza as one of widespread destruction, mass displacements, looming famine, and a collapsed health system. The requested funding is just a portion of the estimated $4.089 billion needed to address the crisis, with the majority allocated for relief work in Gaza and a smaller amount for the West Bank.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza, which began after a Hamas-led attack on Israel in October, has resulted in over 1,200 deaths and severe restrictions on aid distribution. More than 200 aid workers, mostly Palestinians from Gaza, have lost their lives during the conflict, including seven workers from World Central Kitchen who were killed in airstrikes on their convoy.
Israel’s blockade on goods entering Gaza has further complicated aid efforts, with shipments facing meticulous inspections and restrictions on items deemed to have potential military use. Aid groups have reported entire trucks of aid being turned away for minor reasons, while Israel has accused Hamas of diverting aid, a claim refuted by U.S. officials.
The U.N. has called on Israel to improve conditions for aid delivery, including ensuring safe access for aid workers and increasing entry points for humanitarian supplies. Despite recent efforts by Israel to increase aid flow into Gaza, challenges remain in the distribution process.
